  • About

Gumbo Limbo Nature Center is surrounded by a rare remnant of coastal hammock, located on Boca Raton’s barrier island. Our education staff provides informative field trips that include curriculum from the Florida Science standards and hosts over 10,000 children annually from school districts, clubs, and other groups. Our staff of marine biologists and conservationists marks, records, and tracks sea turtle nests on the beach and, in summer, provide experiences to see the turtles nest or the hatchlings released into the sea. In 2012, a record number of nests were recorded on Boca beaches. The Center houses a Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Facility which is to public viewing. Volunteers and staff, while providing treatment to injured or diseased turtles, also answer visitors’ questions and sometimes give up-close views of the animals in our care. The Center includes two outdoor Pavilions with four saltwater tanks, each providing glimpses of different local habitats. We continue to add new sea life, habitat, interpretative signage, and educational exhibits to the tanks and pavilions. A boardwalk provides access to a unique tropical forest where, from the 40-foot observation tower, you can view gumbo limbo trees, migrating birds, Indian middens, the ocean, and the Intracoastal Waterway. On the other side of the Visitor Center, an informal garden attracts butterflies throughout the year. Indoor displays feature wildlife indigenous to South Florida and a panorama of stained glass windows depicting the coastal island as it may have appeared in the 1500s. Florida Atlantic University maintains an onsite marine biology research laboratory with a gallery above the lab allowing visitors to see projects conducted by university scientists. Various programs for all ages are offered throughout the year, the Halloween in the Hammock event being one of the most popular.  Members of Friends of Gumbo Limbo enjoy discounts on programming and in the gift store. On a visit to the Gift Store, guests are sure to find unique, beautiful, and fun educational nature books, jewelry, handbags, toys, puzzles, t-shirts, and much more! Donations help the Center provide those items that are otherwise unfunded. For information, call the main line at 561-544-8605. www.gumbolimbo.org
